It weighs 58 tonnes and measures just over 45 feet in length, with a crew capacity of two. This vehicle was used extensively by the Russian military around the world and the Vityaz helped keep them safe by being almost impervious to AT mine explosions. The Vityaz is also used for rescue operations and has a pull ratio of around 500kN, which means it can free a stuck vehicle when approaching it from pretty much any angle. The Vityaz also includes features that include autonomous return to the mothership if necessary and they can still keep trucking even if both tracks of one unit fail entirely. Furthermore, it’s able to deploy ships offshore, even in incredibly icy conditions. BLG 60 Based on the MT-55, the BLG 60 is an armoured vehicle designed to launch and recover bridges for easier troop movement over rough terrain, streams, or rivers. The machine uses a series of hydraulic cylinders that can be controlled manually or automatically, based on the situation. This machine allows troops to safely deploy bridges while inside the vehicle, protecting them from enemy fire or the elements. When fully deployed, the bridge can carry loads of up to 50 tonnes and spans a length of 18 metres. When the bridge is no longer needed, the crew simply retracts it and moves onto their next location, ready for their next task. VZ 950 TITAN With a fuel capacity of 800 litres, the VZ 950 Titan puts out 768 horsepower and is one of the best industrial shredders on the market. Its Volvo Penta diesel engine is designed for maximum efficiency and extended lifetime, making this one hell of a workhorse. There are two options available that each focus on specific types of material. One is meant to deal with wood, green waste, and minerals, while the other is capable of shredding cars, scrap, and light metal with absolute ease. The machine is tracked, allowing it to be moved from one location to another with minimal effort and it even comes with a remote control if you don’t want to get too close while the machine is powered on. The discharge belt also uses magnets for easy separation of material. The shredder can even be broken down into individual components that allow for stationary systems if you so choose. WHEEL TROLLEY WT1500NT Moving large wheels around can be tricky at times and takes a lot of effort if you’re doing it by yourself. The wheel trolley aims to make these tasks much easier. It can carry wheels between 39.37 inches and 94.49 inches, with a max width, making it quite versatile. A ratchet strap keeps wheels secure during transport and a handle/switch combo makes retracting the jaws or turning the trolley an amazingly simple process. These trolleys can carry a weight of up to 3300 pounds and weighs 661 pounds itself. The good news is that the wheeled trolley doesn’t feel that heavy when you’re moving a load around. 9200 Lattuga This self-propelled, tracked harvester has a four cylinder turbo-diesel engine that pumps out around 74 horsepower. While that may not sound like a lot, the 9200 lattuga doesn’t need much more than that and it’s able to perform its job simply and efficiently. Customizable to suit your specific needs, the 9200 lattuga also has a wealth of accessories that are hooked up via the harvesters extra auxiliary connections. Temporary collection stops allow you to suspend collection and resume it at the press of a button, letting users exchange full loads for empty crates before continuing work. It has a work platform area of 23 metres squared and can carry loads of up to 3000 kg. 5G and the future of transport

Last week I attended one of the world’s largest events for technology innovation, Vivatech Paris, where I had the opportunity to talk about some key aspects of 5G technology and the benefits it brings to mobility use cases. But before I dive into the use cases, I am going to briefly explain what 5G is.

5G in a nutshell

You’ve probably heard about 5G’s promise to bring ultrafast internet to your smartphone via its enhanced mobile broadband feature. While this is true, this isn’t the only mode of 5G we’ll benefit from. There are two other aspects of the technology which will improve our daily lives significantly: one being critical communications where the focus is on resilience and low latency, and the other – massive IoT (or mMTC – massive machine type communications), where the focus is on optimizing battery time and device cost for sensors. Another key aspect of 5G is network slicing, which is the ability to define sub-networks within a single network, with specific quality of service for dedicated usage.

Benefits that 5G brings to transport

Before discussing what the fifth generation of mobile connectivity can bring to transportation, let’s briefly discuss what the key issues of transport in big cities are. These include traffic congestion, pollution and collisions, which can all be related. 5G can address these issues by enabling a truly Intelligent Transport System – let’s see how it can do that by specifically looking at three aspects: vehicle to vehicle, vehicle to infrastructure and multimodal transportation.

Vehicle to vehicle (V2V): 5G will enable direct communication from vehicle to vehicle, without passing through the network, to prevent traffic congestion and delays. Autonomous vehicles are capable of alerting others of change of conditions, such as collisions, weather, road incidents. This allows autonomous vehicle to drive close to each other in what is called “platoons” or a group of vehicles going in the same direction at a given time achieving an optimization of the traffic, while increasing the safety on the road.

Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I): For this aspect, 5G will enable communication between the vehicle and infrastructure such as sensors, traffic lights, cameras, drones, and others. The issue today is that the wireless technologies used by existing systems are fragmented; but 5G will not only unify the communication and provide direct low latency, but it will also enable intelligent applications which are not achievable today. For example, an experiment on smart traffic, done over existing technologies by the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg in the US from several years ago, has shown a decrease in journey time by as much as 40 percent and pollutant emissions by 20 percent.

Multimodal transportation: The idea here is to combine several ways of transportation along your journey: for example, taking a bus, then a share car then using a micro-mobility solution such as an electric bike or a scooter. The challenge lays in making a smooth transition from one mode of transport to another and making sure that registration and payment is as seamless and secure as possible. This is also called people-centric mobility. All this relates to the management of digital identities across the different systems and providers, which is currently handled separately. And, of course, it’s key that we ensure security and user privacy. We are making strides to solve this via an innovation called Trusted Digital Identities.

To conclude, 5G has a huge potential to transform the current transport systems into intelligent systems through three key drivers: standard networks, optimized communication for vehicles and interconnected digital identity systems. Being a part of Thales group, we are jointly carrying out significant work on this, but there needs to be an ecosystem of partners in order to achieve this in scale.

Three of the best ideas from the IoT Innovation World Cup® Series 2019

The award ceremony for the 10^th annual Innovation World Cup® Series took place at MWC Barcelona this February, celebrating the IoT game changers of today. The jury selected 20 start-ups for the finals, out of more than 500 submissions from over 45 nations. A winner is selected for each of the five categories based on the most promising solution that shows a high degree of innovation, strong technological feasibility and proven market readiness.

The Innovation World Cup is often credited as being the most established open innovation platform worldwide. It acts as a catalyst for innovation as it connects the ingenuity of technology entrepreneurs with leading industry partners, like us. Connecting these techpreneurs with leading industry partners allows them to create powerful alliances capable of transforming budding ideas into global giants.

With over 45 leading regional ICT cluster partnerships, the Innovation World Cup Series provides a huge opportunity for start-ups to gain exposure and win prizes worth over $500,000 to boost their development and marketing. As such, it has established an impressive track record in introducing new breakthrough technologies and solutions in the market, building up new ecosystems and identifying and promoting the rising IoT stars. The awards aim to highlight the best emerging IoT solutions to some of the world’s biggest problems, demonstrating to potential investors the massive growth potential in these new industries.

For us, it’s a real honor to be a part of these awards and get the first look at where new IoT technology is going. To show you the significance of the winning ideas to the future of industry, we’ve picked out a few to explain how they work in more detail.

NOWI – Top IoT Innovator “Industrial”

Dutch semiconductor innovator firm NOWI was awarded first place for its work in solving the power bottleneck in smart devices. NOWI’s innovative solution continuously brings energy to your device in lieu of wires or batteries by using the energy that is already available around the device. This can be light, heat, movement or even radio waves. Taking a form of a small chip that can be used in IoT devices, this technology will enable the creation of products that are either completely batteryless or hybrid battery devices with a greatly extended lifetime.

For consumers, having this technology will save both monetary and environmental costs associated with charging your devices. With predictions that there will soon be over 30 billion connected devices in the world, the requirement for power is only going to soar, so technology like NOWI’s that can help make IoT devices more efficient is becoming ever more significant.

MJN Neuroservices with MJN-Seras – Top “Catalan IoT Innovator”

Catalonian health innovator MJN Neuroservices was another top performer this year. The company is putting AI to use in a wearable medical device that records the brain activity of epileptics and can detect their risk of having a seizure at any time. The device, which looks similar in shape and size to a hearing aid, registers different brain patterns, predicting when seizures might be about to occur. It is partnered to a smartphone app that can send a message of their geolocation to trusted contacts in users’ phones, in case of a seizure.

People who suffer from epilepsy can really struggle with managing its symptoms effectively. But, having the knowledge to anticipate a fit before it happens will allow epileptics to take the necessary safety precautions, minimizing the risks associated with falling to the ground or off something during a seizure. For many, this will result in a massive improvement to their quality of life. The MJN Seras prove that the power of AI technology in healthcare can be enormous and it will be interesting to watch how this develops further in the future.

Stenon – Top IoT Innovator “Agriculture”

German company Stenon was also crowned the winner of its category with its real-time soil analysis enabled through sensor fusion and AI. Currently, farmers must send samples of their soil to laboratories to have it analyzed before they can work out how to optimize their soil health and overall cultivation. This is an expensive process and it can take weeks before any results are known. However, with Stenon the process becomes a case of DIY.

With the sensor technology farmers can analyze their soil as often as they like and receive immediate results with laboratory precision. This technology has multiple advantages for farmers, one being that they can act immediately if there is a problem to improve the quality of their soil, minimizing any damage to their yield. Furthermore, farmers are able to take as many samples as they want, meaning they should also save on fertilizer costs, as more samples allow for a higher level of customization about where and how much fertilizer to apply. This, again, demonstrates the power of AI in reducing costs and maximizing efficiency in a sector where finding these efficiencies will be vital in the future as demand continues to increase.

Being part of the Innovation World Cup is always an enjoyable and inspiring experience. The ideas from this year’s event prove that the role of IoT technology in the future will not only transform society and industries but will be crucial in making our current processes work better.

Fujifilm X-T30 Review: Most of the X-T3 for nearly half the price

Fujifilm managed to steal a lot of thunder from all the new full-frame cameras with the launch of the X-T3. It shot to the top of my APS-C camera list with advanced video features, an excellent new sensor and fast shooting speeds. I was happily surprised when Fujifilm then announced the X-T30, which is a huge leap over its predecessor, the X-T20. It actually shares many of the X-T3’s features, like the 26.1-megapixel resolution, but costs $600 less.
